Functions
The Treasurer’s Office collects real, personal, motor vehicle, and other taxes and disburses to County government, municipalities, schools and special taxing districts in Williamsburg County.
The Treasurer’s Office also maintains records of revenues collected by other departments, invests any funds not immediately needed for disbursement and acts as paying agent for bonds for the County and School districts.
Holding Agent
The Treasurer, an elected official, serves as the holding agent for funds of many County departments. Departments deposit funds received from grants, plat sales, fines and fees with the Treasurer Office. The Treasurer invests all available funds to generate additional revenues for the County in the form of interest earning.
Treasurer’s Duties
The specific duties of the Treasurer are listed and described in Title 12, Chapter 45 of the South Carolina Code of Laws.
Personal Property Taxes
Motor Vehicles
Owners must pay 1 year in advance in order to obtain a vehicle license tag. The exception occurs when the dealer obtains vehicle license tag; taxes are then due and payable within 120 days. The Treasurer’s Office works with the SC Department of Motor Vehicles "online" for renewal of vehicle registration and decals.
Real Property
- Real property taxes are due and payable on or before January 15, without penalty.
- After January 15, a 3% penalty is added.
- Beginning February 2, through March 16, an additional 7% penalty is added.
- On March 17 all unpaid taxes on the following are put in execution to the Delinquent Tax Collector’s Office:
- Boats/motors
- Mobile homes
- Real property
- Tax commission billing
