Williamsburg County E-911 operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with at least 3 persons on a 12-hour rotating shift to answer all 911 and 7 digit administrative lines. Our dispatchers have to get and maintain certifications in basic telecommunication by SC State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), NCIC, CPR, and other various training to operate equipment needed to handle calls. Telecommunicators must be at least 21 years of age and pass a background check to be considered for employment.
CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) is just one peripheral that telecommunicators use to do their daily task. A computer based software system for the phones and radios assist in helping the public and communicating with public safety personnel. Other computers are used to run licenses and enter information into the NCIC system; which is a highly secure system which will require training and continued security checks while employed.
Good communications skills are a highly sought after attribute of a telecommunication officer. Being able to calm an irate caller and passing that information on to responding emergency workers is vital to getting the correct help in a timely manner.
